Tell us about your job in a nutshell

My role as driver trainer involves training all our tanker and tipper drivers to ensure they are operating in the most safe and efficient way.  This includes compliance with the Fleet Operators’ Recognition Scheme (FORS) Silver Standard; fuel efficient driving; and the RASOW (Risk Assessment and Safe Assessment of Work) guidelines.

My day is always different but can include looking at the drivers’ Key Performance Indicators (KPIs); fuel efficiency (ie the Miles Per Gallon each driver is achieving as this makes a substantial impact on our fleet operating costs); office administration; and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) coordination.

And if we are short on drivers, I even jump back into the cab again to ensure our customers are still receiving their deliveries on time!

How has your career developed within Longcliffe?

I started with Longcliffe in 2009 as an eight-wheel tipper driver; then moved on to drive the articulated tanker lorries.  Whilst carrying out tanker procedures and tasks, I would take new recruits out for training. I also train new internal quarry plant operatives in the process of tanker loading-unloading. I became Driver Trainer in 2021.

What training/qualifications do you have and what are the key skills you need to do your job?

I have a Class 1 HGV licence and 12 years of practical experience and understanding of the Longcliffe aggregates and industrial powders business. I also have Level 3 qualifications through the Mineral Product Qualifications Council (MPQC).

Important skills for my job are Health and Safety awareness; patience; diplomacy and consistent time keeping.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

I enjoy the variety – every day the work scenarios are different.

Sometimes I also get involved with other company activities like the annual Hoe Grange Nature Reserve Open Day – an event held in a nearby former Longcliffe quarry that is now a butterfly reserve.

What are your career aspirations?

My main ambition at work is to capitalize on my learning at Longcliffe.

What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a job with Longcliffe?

I would tell any potential employees that Longcliffe is a family-run business with excellent wages; a good pension scheme; great in-house tuition across all departments; modern equipment/technology and a very solid Health and Safety record.

Whilst my work focuses on looking after transport team employees, we all have that duty of care whilst working for Longcliffe. All employees are committed to looking after the Longcliffe limestone products being sent out to customers.
