Tell us about your job in a nutshell
My job is to deliver calcium carbonate products to our customers. I work mainly on articulated bulk powder tankers, but occasionally I drive the eight-wheel 32 tonne rigid tipper trucks, delivering aggregates.
I start work anywhere between 04:00 - 06:00 depending on where I am going, and what time the customer requires delivery. Every morning, I carry out a walkaround check on the vehicle to check all is in order especially with the safety features. We typically do one long distance delivery, or two shorter distance deliveries per day if we are delivering powders. If I am driving a tipper, we can do as many as seven deliveries in a day.
How has your career developed since you started working for Longcliffe?
I have been an HGV driver for just over five years and worked for Longcliffe since 2022. Since joining Longcliffe I have trained to operate powder tankers, whereas I used to previously only operate tippers. I have also been trained to operate the Longcliffe planning system and have recently deputised for the tanker planner.
What training/qualifications do you have and what are the key skills you need to do your job
In addition to a Cat C+E (class 1) driving licence, like all HGV drivers I have to maintain my Drivers’ CPC (can we spell this out please?) which is 35 hours training every five years. This year our CPC training was centred around First Aid. We have an in-house driver trainer who offers support with us driving in the safest and fuel-efficient way.
Time keeping is important. We are given a time that the customer requires the delivery; most of the time we are given the autonomy to start at whatever time we feel is appropriate, provided that the customer has their delivery on time.
Although we how have sat nav, an HGV driver still needs to be able to plan routes before they leave, as there are some roads that HGVs can not use, for instance if there are weight restrictions or low bridges.
People skills are really important. We are customer facing and I am acutely aware that we are representing the company, not only whilst we are at the customer’s site, but whilst we are on the public highway.
What do you most enjoy about your job?
I like the family feel of the company. If you work for a big company, you feel more like a number, whereas working for Longcliffe everybody knows each other. I enjoy seeing the country whilst driving and to a degree there is a certain amount of flexibility. Since I have trained up as a planner, I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the job.
What are your career aspirations?
Unsure at the moment. I quite enjoy doing what I am doing right now. I enjoy driving but have also appreciated the opportunity to work in the office.
What would you say to anyone thinking of applying for a job with Longcliffe?
With regards to a driving job, speaking from experience, I would say that you wouldn’t get a better job within this area for certain. We are treated well, the vehicles are mostly new with the latest driving and safety technology; and the uniform, safety equipment and clothing are all provided.
